What Are Micronations?
A micronation is literally a very small nation, a nation normally being a group of people who share the same culture.
Micronations have existed in one form or another for many years, and have usually arisen as artistic communities, secessionist movements or publicity-seeking means of local protest about political issues.
There is also a genre of micronations known as imaginary or model countries, which seem generally to be created by the young, but which some people pursue into adult life. Sometimes these might be based around one's home, bedroom or yard. Sometimes they might never progress beyond the creative writing stage.
However the increasingly widespread availability of the internet in recent years has given these model countries a new lease of life, and has ultimately resulted in the creation of some unique online communities.
Online model countries are easily the most common form of micronation today, as the basic structures are very easy to create - normally consisting of an informational website and a message board where day-to-day life takes place. The lack of actual land does not present any problems, as many micronations develop their own virtual territories on maps as part of greater virtual worlds.
Unlike the role-playing-game (RPG) communities, there are no fixed roles or rules, but social and political behaviour generally follows the accepted patterns for the cultures and government systems being simulated and developed. Needless to say, a reasonably mature approach to being a citizen or a politician is an advantage.
